My presentation of my Red Bull project to the crowd at Lizard Lounge. Filmed May 25th, 2011 via iPhone courtesy of my good friend Vinh.

Here are the results of my experimental design final. Pieces from seven pairs of jeans and one pair of canvas Carhartt pants, all made in the USA, make up this denim jacket.

All the materials (except for thread and patches) were sourced from the Goodwill bins. I estimate it took about 30 hours to complete. Twelve hours were spent just on the initial orientation of the torso. The patches were sourced at a local military surplus store.

I’m pretty happy with the results. I’ve got another stack of rescued American made denim that’s ready for similar project.

In short, I got an “A” in the class.

“So what’s next?” This was the second most commonly asked question of me at the Experimental Design Showcase after “How long did this take?!” Ha!

What’s next is the 13th Annual Art Institute of Portland Fashion Show where my friend and Experimental Design class partner Taylor Durgan and I will show a single collaborative ensemble as part of the show’s first act, called Fit-2-Print. Our entire look is primarily constructed of paper! That’s all the hint you get for now.

Tickets to the show are $20 and you’ll get to see the entire Fit-2-Print collection, plus all the senior collections from this year’s graduating class! So come on out and see something different on Saturday, June 4th!

My friend and classmate Rachael accepting her winnings from the VitaminWater Zero design competition at this year’s Portland Mercury Opean Season fashion show.

Great job Rachael! Congratulations also to Taylor, Tiffany, and Jace, all fellow classmates who had successful showings at the show this year.

As for the show itself…let’s just say that the Portland Mercury could take a few lessons from my friends at Doomtown Productions on how to put on a fashion show. If myself or my friends aren’t showing in it next year, I’m not going.

Friday, May 6th come see my some of my favorite classmates participate in this year’s Open Season fashion show put on by The Portland Mercury as part of the Vitamin Water design competition. The designs will be juried by none other than the past THREE northwest grown Project Runway winners Leanne Marshall, Seth Aaron Henderson, and Gretchen Jones!

See the official website to see the list of other designers showing at this event as well as ticket information.

Tracy and I are going! Come join us!
